Once a month, I visit Scott's Antique Market for rustic decor ideas. They have a wide selection of furniture & accessories for any type of decor need. The only obstacle is trying not to buy everything in sight. Since I struggle with this, I decided to select some of my own furniture to refinish, and save money.
The goal was to transform my traditional end table into a vintage, rustic piece. For this project, I chose the Martha Stewart Crafts line, which includes Vintage Decor Chalk Paint. Depending on the type of color palette you're looking for, you should also consider "FolkArt Home Decor Chalk" paint or "Annie Sloan" chalk paint. With this piece, I selected the following colors by Martha Stewart Crafts, which you can purchase online, or at Michael's in store:
1 8 oz. "Beetle Black" = $10.99
1 8 oz. "Sailor Blue" = $10.99
1 8 oz. "Clear Wax" = $10.99
This particular paint does not require sanding or priming. To get this particular look, simply apply a first coat of black to the entire table, and let dry. Apply a second coat of black only to the base. Then, switch to sailor blue, and paint over the black table top. However, if you want your table to be uniform in color, feel free to use the sailor blue for the entire table. I thought a lighter color for the table top would be a nice contrast from its base. Once both layers of paint have dried, sand all surfaces and edges to reveal the layers beneath, prior to waxing. This will give your furniture that rustic look.
